Add Ability to Edit Layouts to a User Defined Role
    SOLUTION ID 17701

To setup an AxisTV user that can only access the Display Layout Editor in the AxisTV Desktop application:

1- Login to AxisTV as an administrator
2- From the menu options on the left hand side of the screen take the following:
          1- Configure
          2- Security
          3- Roles
Add a new role by entering a new role name, description, and clicking Add
4- Select the new Role you just created from the ‘Privileges for’ dropdown list
1- From Excluded Privileges, select Administer Display Groups and using the directional arrows add to the Included Privileges list
2- From Excluded Privileges, select Administer Content Settings and using the directional arrows add to the Included Privileges list
                3- Click Apply Changes

A user that has been setup with the newly created role will only be able to login to the AxisTV Desktop application, not the AxisTV web interface, and will only have access to the Display Layout Editor and Media Importer features.  Anyone assigned the new role who was already logged in to their AxisTV Desktop will need to log out and then back in to pick up the changes.

To add the Display Layout Editor privilege to an existing role, follow the steps below:

1- Login to AxisTV as an administrator
2- From the menu options on the left hand side of the screen take the following.

The system has reached the maximum size allowed for the system part of registry, additional storage requests will be ignored.
    SOLUTION ID 22501

Several customers have reported the following Windows error on their Channel Players; “The system has reached the maximum size allowed for the system part of registry, additional storage requests will be ignored.”

In each case, PC Angel disaster recovery software was available on the player and using it to restore the player to its factory default settings appears to have resolved the issue.

In at least one instance, a customer did not have antivirus software installed.  After installing antivirus software, it reported a virus in the registry.  PC Angel also resolved this case.

Another customer had the same issue.  They installed antivirus software, performed a scan and allowed it to clean any detected infections.  They rebooted the player and have not had the error since then.

    AxisTV Device Disaster Recovery
    SOLUTION ID 2171

    Overview
When it has been determined that the best solution to resolve an issue is to restore an AxisTV device to its factory default state, refer to the following AxisTV device disaster recovery information.

Visix hardware vendors provide various methods of disaster recovery.  Your AxisTV device should have one of the following disaster recovery options available.  If you cannot determine the method used or have other questions, please contact Visix Support at support@visix.com or (800) 572-4935.

    PC Angel
To determine whether or not your AxisTV device has PC Angel disaster recovery software installed, watch for the text "Protected by PC Angel" during POST, and for the PC Angel animated logo to be displayed in the lower right-hand corner of the screen just after logging into Windows.

To restore the system to the factory default settings using PC Angel:

Make sure the device is connected to a network with a DHCP server, that there is access to the Internet for activating Windows, and that you can locate the Windows COA
Start the device and press F10 when ""Protected by PC Angel"" appears during POST.  This will start the PC Angel utility.
Follow the on-screen instructions and choose the Factory System Recovery option that will not attempt to save any data on the drive.
Note: With some versions of PC Angel, you must choose Advanced Options and then select System Recovery – Quick Format
Please be patient as this may take several minutes (15-20 minutes is normal)
When it has finished, press Restart to restart the device

Note: PC Angel disaster recovery software may have a limited recovery period.  Visix had one report where a user was notified that the recovery period had expired, and after rebooting, PC Angel was no longer an option.

    Seneca Data Recovery Center
To determine whether or not your AxisTV device has Seneca Data Recovery Center disaster recovery software installed, look in the Windows Start Menu for the shortcut.

To restore the system to the factory default settings using PC Angel:

Run Start | All Programs | Seneca Data Recovery | Seneca Data Recovery Center
Select the ‘Factory system recovery’ option and follow the prompts to complete the process

    After Recovery
After recovering the hard drive image you must allow a series of Visix scripts to run automatically.  The machine will reboot several times during the process.  Please be patient as this may take several minutes.

If you are prompted to activate Windows before all scripts have completed successfully, answer NO to allow the scripts to continue.
If you are prompted to restart due to new drivers before all scripts have completed successfully, answer NO to allow the scripts to continue.
When all scripts have completed, then answer YES to activating Windows if prompted, and enter the Windows product license number from the COA label affixed to the machine
The AxisTV device is now ready for use

    Adding a font to AxisTV
    SOLUTION ID 2148

You can add true-type fonts to an AxisTV System just as you would to any PC. Simply copy a true-type font file into the Fonts folder in the Control Panel of the AxisTV Content Manager and reboot. Then, the font will be available for use in AxisTV.

Font files must also be copied into the Fonts folder in the Control Panel of each Channel Player.

Note: each font rendition (bold, italics, etc.) has its own file.

Here is also a Microsoft KB article that may be useful: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314960.

AxisTV device does not automatically power on
    SOLUTION ID 17702

Issue: An AxisTV device does not automatically power on after an eternal loss of AC power.

Reason: There have been isolated instances where AxisTV devices shipped from Visix with an incorrect BIOS configuration that may cause this issue.

Solution: Edit the BIOS configuration.  The procedure differs depending on which hardware configuration Visix was delivering at the time.  Basically, at bootup, on the BIOS Splash screen, click the appropriate key to edit the BIOS (usually F2 or Del) and use the cursor keys to navigate to the proper menu.

Some examples of the BIOS setting include, but are not limited to, the following:

    • Power | After Power Failure  - value should be set to Last State
    • Chipset | South Bridge Configuration | Restore on AC Power Loss - value should be set to Last State
    • Power Management Setup | AC PWR Auto Recovery - value should be set to Former-Sts

Save the change and reboot the device.

Players Are Missing in Web Interface
    SOLUTION ID 15902

As of build 7.1, AxisTV includes an enhancement to user security – specifically, the ability to grant users access to specific Media Players.

When AxisTV build 7.1 or higher is applied to an existing system, ALL players will be excluded from ALL user accounts.  System Administrators may then begin granting users access to players via the Configure | Security | Users screen, Assigned Players section.  When a user with administrative privilege adds a player to the system, only their account will have access to it initially.

  • 10 Tips for a Successful Implementation

     1. Get the right people involved.

    • Identify one technical leader – this will be someone in your IT department. AxisTV is installed on your network and has specific network requirements. In addition to meeting initial network requirements, the system needs to be maintained over time. Technical leaders serve as the first point of internal escalation for technical issues, work with Visix Support to resolve issues, and plan for regular system maintenance, data backups and software updates.
    • Identify one content leader – this will likely be someone in Marketing or Communications with an eye for design and an understanding of what type of information you want to publish for your audience. Content leaders make decisions not only on the look and feel of the content, but will also decide who has access to create and approve content and where the content will play.
    2. Build the infrastructure.
    • Work with Visix and your AV integrator. All hardware (content manager, media players, displays and video distribution equipment) should be installed prior to the software implementation.
    3. Understand the process.
    • Schedule a pre-implementation call with Visix. Your network administrator and AV integrator should attend. We’ll help make sure the network people understand the system requirements prior to the implementation date and review the implementation checklist with all parties.
    4. Plan your content.
    • List the types and sources for communications you’ll want to publish. Knowing what you want to display, and where, will help you plan your playlists and content settings.
    • Think about using content that you already have. Most standard image and video files can also be imported into AxisTV, and PowerPoint presentations are also an option.
    • Determine who can contribute, what creative resources you have and what approval process you’ll employ, if any.
    5. Let Visix help.
    • Purchase a Branded Theme Pack. The Visix Creative Team will work with you to design a custom look for your digital signage so you look great on Day 1. Custom layouts and coordinating backgrounds will be applied and scheduled during your implementation.
    • Purchase remote implementation services. Visix can do the software configuration for you via remote connection using WebEx Support Center. If your organization doesn’t allow access to WebEx, talk to your Visix Account Representative about our on-site services.
    6. Start simple.
    • If creating content seems overwhelming, start with one content block for corporate or campus-wide announcements. Use our premium weather service, Visix News service and RSS feeds in other content blocks and tickers. These update automatically, keeping content fresh and your audience interested with minimal effort.
    7. Attend training.
    • With the Comprehensive Training Package you get one year of unlimited access to six online courses. Plan to take the training on or near your implementation date so that you can start using your system immediately after training. This helps you to apply what you’ve learned and locks in the information. As you come across new questions or new people join your organization, you can take the training session again.
    • Take advantage of custom training. This is a two-hour training session customized just for your organization, and is available to customers who purchase the training package at no additional charge. Query our trainers to address the specific needs of your organization and focus on the features that are most important to your AxisTV deployment.
    8. Publish policies.
    • By publishing standardized policies about how to create, manage and deliver your visual communications, you can streamline workflows and improve your messages’ content and look. List basic branding criteria, formatting rules, approval processes and contacts.
    9. Apply regular software updates.
    • Take advantage of new features. Attend “New Features” webinars offered with each new release to understand how the new features can be used in your environment. Software maintenance customers receive software updates at no charge.
    10. Call Visix!
    • If at any time during your deployment process you have questions about what to do next, contact your Project Manager at Visix. We’re here to help.

PowerPoint 2010 and graphic card hardware acceleration issue
    SOLUTION ID 10501

In Microsoft PowerPoint 2010, Slide Show view, you might receive the following notification that PowerPoint can improve the quality and performance of your presentation:

'PowerPoint has detected that you graphics card may not be configured properly for an optimal slide show experience'

The notification suggests that the problem might be caused by the graphics card in your computer, and that you should upgrade it or its drivers.

Obviously, this pop-up notification is undesirable on AxisTV Media Players.

Why did I get this notification?
Slide Show view in PowerPoint 2010 includes hardware graphics acceleration capabilities, which help make motion graphics, such as transitions, animation, and video, appear to move more smoothly. To learn more, see Hardware Acceleration in PowerPoint 2010.

Hardware graphics acceleration works only if your computer’s graphics card is sufficiently updated to enable it. If it is not, performance of the motion graphics in Slide Show view is reduced and you receive this notification

    What can I do?
To stop receiving the notification, do one of the following:

    • Update your computer’s graphics card or drivers
      • Most graphics card manufacturers provide driver updates as free downloads. To determine the manufacturer of your computer’s graphics card, right-click the desktop and click the option that includes the word “graphics” or the card manufacturer’s name.
      • Updating a computer graphics card typically requires advanced knowledge of computer hardware. Consult user information from your computer manufacturer or a professional computer technician.
    • Disable hardware acceleration
      • If you cannot or do not want to upgrade your graphics card or drivers, disabling hardware acceleration will stop the notification from appearing.
      • Note: If you do this, performance of motion graphics in slide show view remains reduced.
        • On the Media Player, open PPT
        • Click the File tab.
        • Click Options.
        • Click Advanced.
        • Under Display, select the Disable hardware graphics acceleration check box.

Screensaver stops working after migrating AxisTV data to new Content Manager
    SOLUTION ID 2701

This issue was related to a missing font.  The issue began after the AxisTV data was migrated to a new Content Server that did not have all of the same fonts installed as the original Content Manager.  The following error message was in the AxisTV error report:

    Tei.Content.AxisBitmap.DrawToScale.999

System.ArgumentException: Font 'Cooper Black' cannot be found.
       at System.Drawing.FontFamily.CreateFontFamily(String name, FontCollection fontCollection)
       at System.Drawing.FontFamily..ctor(String name)
       at Tei.Content.AxisBitmap.DrawToScale(Size size, Boolean outlineSections)

    --- caused the following exception:

    Exception Tei.Common.AxisException
    Assembly:    Tei.Content.Drawing.dll
    Error Code:  Tei.Content.AxisBitmap.DrawToScale.999
    Description: Unanticipated exception caught.
       at Tei.Content.AxisBitmap.DrawToScale(Size size, Boolean outlineSections)
       at Tei.Content.ScreensaverPlugin.RegenerationThread.regenerate()

PowerPoint had been installed on the original Content Manager, but not on the new Content Manager.  When PowerPoint was installed (with all fonts) on the new Content Manger, the Screensaver feature began working and the Screensaver clients began receiving content.

Unable to reserve room on Interactive MeetingMinder (iMM)

    AxisTV Playlist Groups

    Solution ID 2217

Playlist Groups is an AxisTV feature available to Enterprise customers as a convenience to simplify the workflow when scheduling content to many Playlists at one time.

Once a Playlist Group is created, it is available to all users. When a user schedules content to a Playlist Group, the content will be scheduled to all Playlists in the group, even if the group contains one or more Playlists that are not included for the user on the Configure | Security | Users screen.

You may schedule content to individual Playlists and Playlist Groups at the same time. If an individual Playlist is selected, and also a Playlist Group selected that contains the same individual Playlist, the content will only be scheduled once to the Playlist. Use CTRL-Click to deselect individual Playlists if you only want to schedule to Playlist Groups.

  • Top Solutions from Visix Support Center - February

Our Visix Support Center has a vast database of searchable solutions for common questions and issues. Here are the top solutions this month, as rated by customer searches:

Can I use Remote Desktop with AxisTV Channel Players?

    Solution ID: 2120

    Applies to:
This information applies to version 5.0.1 to 7.0.22. (08/19/10)
This information was correct at the time of publication. It may apply to newer versions of AxisTV as well.

    Solution:

When connecting to AxisTV Channel Players via Remote Desktop, any adjustments to the video settings only affects the virtual output, NOT the actual video output of the player. Also, after connecting via Remote Desktop, you MUST reboot the player to put it back into a proper working state.

    RSS Adapter (News Plugin)

    Solution ID: 2101

    Description:

The RSS Feed Adapter (RSS) provides a way to point to text-based RSS feeds to be displayed as bulletins or tickers.  It can be configured to pull RSS feeds from one or more sources on a regular basis and populate news categories.

    Compatibility:

The AxisTV RSS Adapter is RSS 2.0 compliant.

    Mandatory Fields:

The following tags must be present in the RSS feed:

    • title or link
    • description
    • pubDate (must use GMT)

Using Special Characters and HTML Entities:

If you want to use special characters such as ampersands (&) in \'url\' or \'link\' tags, you must substitute the appropriate decimal or HTML entities for those characters.  (Refer to the Useful Links below.)

Limitations of RSS Feeds and Tickers:

Each RSS story (description field) is limited to 512 characters that will display in AxisTV. In a ticker RSS is limited to 5 stories per ticker. Each of these 5 can contain 512 characters.  If using bulletins the limitation is still 512 characters per story, but you can show up to 10 stories.

Keep in mind that if you are using the ticker.overlay ticker instead of the default ticker, then you are further limited by the ticker limit.

    Hardware:

No additional hardware is required for this feature.

    Software:

The RSS Feed Adapter was introduced in AxisTV 6.2.  A few enhancements have been made to the RSS Feed Adapter in subsequent releases, making AxisTV 7.0 the minimum recommended version.

No additional software is required for this feature.

    Licensing:

The RSS Feed Adapter is licensed on a per system basis and is coupled with the News Feed Plugin (AXIS-TV-DFN) license.

    • If RSS is purchased at the same time the initial system is purchased, it will be activated automatically when the Content Server is initialized.
    • If RSS is purchased later, the licensing must be activated manually using the License Manager utility located on the Content Server.  An RSS license file (News Plugin.lic) will be e-mailed to the customer.

    Configuration:

    Windows

The service account(s) used by the AxisTV Windows services, specifically the AxisTV Content Service and AxisTV News Plugin services, must have access and permission to the RSS feed(s).

    AxisTV

Configuration of the RSS Feed Adapter is done via the Web interface, on the Configure | News | RSS Feeds screen.  You should decide whether you want to separate RSS Feeds by category up front because if you do not, then you will not be able to filter by category when creating bulletins or tickers.

    • You must provide the URL to the RSS Feed, and may specify an existing News Category or enter a new category in the text box to the right of the drop-down list.
    • On "Add/Change" the new category will be added to the list of categories and it will be available from then on.
    • "Filter" filters the news for occurrence of a specific string value.
    • "Update interval" specifies how often, in minutes, to poll data from the RSS feed.
    • "Publish Cutoff" establishes the maximum age, in days, the RSS item can be to be included in the import.
    • You may arbitrarily limit the maximum number of items with "Max Count". In order to test an RSS Feed, use the "Import Now" button.

  • Client Services – New Additions

In recent months, I am pleased to announce that 4 new associates have joined the rapidly growing Client Services Group. Javier Ayala, Alexandria Farar, and James Mize have been a valuable addition to our helpdesk and implementation team. We also welcome Ellyce Kelly, as the newest addition to the training team. Together, our goal is to provide superior service and technical support for customers, resellers, and technology partners.  The addition of personnel has enabled Client Services to extend operating hours to better support our customers in other time zones. The new hours are 8:30AM to 7:30PM EST Monday through Thursday, and 8:30AM to 5:30PM EST on Friday. We have also recently completed construction on our new Network Operations Center (NOC). The six-station NOC is equipped with more than 20 displays, servers, workstations, signal routing technologies, and real-time call management and diagnostic applications. This facility addition is designed to provide an active, collaborative environment where Client Services staff are better able to monitor, troubleshoot, and quickly service Visix client calls. The NOC also houses the company’s high-end dynamic visual messaging system, AxisTV Enterprise, which delivers corporate communications to NOC staff, as well as remote and Atlanta-based personnel.
